Both GNOME and KDE, in recent years, have cluttered up the desktop with MS-Windows-like icons. If, like me, you prefer to have nothing on your desktop, then this procedure may help.
gconf-editor
. If you don't have it installed,
then as root run yum install gconf-editor
./apps/nautilus/desktop
gconf-editor
.
