If you want to just install a regular CentOS 5.1 installation on a IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T42, then you don't really need any special instructions. Insert the DVD, boot it, and you're on your way.
However, if you want to have a secure machine (in the sense that if it is lost or stolen, it is merely an inconvenience and does not result in a catastrophic compromise of your personal, client, or other data that may have been on the machine), then some extra instructions are in order. I have documented this procedure separately at the Encrypted Root and Swap with LVM on CentOS 5.1 / 5.2 / 5.3 page.
There have been various changes to RedHat and derivative distributions over the years that I find annoying, but are arguably a personal preference thing. I have detailed these things and how to change them in an annoyances page. Feel free to pick and choose those that are of interest.
